Choosing a SIP Trunk Provider in Australia: Questions to Ask
Compare phone connectivity using compatibility, call capacity, porting, support and emergency arrangements rather than unsupported rankings.
Compare the service, not a league table
A SIP trunk connects your phone system to the telephone network. A useful comparison starts with your phone platform, numbers, peak call demand and business locations. There is no single provider that is best for every environment.
Check compatibility first
For 3CX, consult its current Australian provider list and check the relevant support or testing category. Confirm that the selected plan, authentication method and hosting arrangement are supported. A familiar carrier name alone is not a configuration approval.
Ask these questions
- How many simultaneous calls does the proposal allow, and what happens at capacity?
- Which call types attract additional charges?
- How are suspicious or unexpectedly high call charges detected and limited?
- Who handles a carrier fault, and how is it escalated?
- What are the porting requirements and dependencies for all existing numbers?
- What are the emergency-calling arrangements for each business location?
Plan the practical details
Document the numbers and account ownership before starting a port. Ask whether other services are attached to the existing account. Agree the carrier window and retain a fallback route for important calls.
Check how phones behave during a power or internet interruption. Discuss an alternative communication path and staff instructions; do not assume that moving to a cloud phone system removes local connectivity dependencies.
Compare full costs
Separate trunk or capacity charges, call usage, number rental, hardware, hosting and support. Confirm setup fees, notice periods and change-of-provider arrangements. Avoid comparing only a monthly advertised figure.
Our phone system services can help prepare the requirements and a test plan before you select a carrier.
